Day Seventeen: Prime Number
Woke up around 10. Watched Dead Like Me and Gilmore Girls DVDs until about 2. Printed out a cover letter and resume to apply for another UCLA job. Called an optometrist in Westwood to see about getting an eye exam for contacts. They had an appointment at 4:30, so I figured I'd get some exercise and just walk there. On my way there, I got a voicemail from Randy asking if I wanted to see Spider-Man, but my battery died before I could call him back. I got to my appointment pretty much exactly on time, but they weren't quite ready for me so I watched King of the Hill in the waiting room. It was about 5:00 by the time the doctor saw me, but I was out by 5:30 and already wearing the spanking new contacts. Afterwards I continued up into Westwood to see if I could get Spider-Man tickets for 10:40 PM. I got them, but since the cell phone battery was still dead, I had to use a goddamn PAY PHONE to call Randy. Yes, a pay phone, because the Western Union telegraph machine was down. After leaving him a couple messages I decided to get my hair cut, an event long overdue. One of the cadre of snippy Eastern European ladies at Freddy & Liana's gave me a pretty good cut, though she pretty much disregarded my request to keep it long on top. Called Randy again after I was done and learned we needed 3 more tickets: for Eti, Nancy, and a previously unknown girl, Leslie (one of Randy's school chums, as someone in the 1920s would say). This is where things took a turn for the complicated. I would be meeting a new girl, which is always good, but the shirt I was wearing was this old faded, wrinkled piece of crap with stains all over it. Fine for walking 3.5 miles in; not so great for making first impressions on the fairer sex. But no problem, right? Westwood has all kinds of clothing stores... at least, for girls. They shut down the Gap a few months ago, Urban Outfitters isn't open yet, and the gimmicky t-shirts in Aahs leave something to be desired. I walked around in circles until I found City Rags, a little used (or is that vintage?) clothing store next to Starbucks. (Speaking of which, Starbucks was giving away free Frappucino Lights... tastes just like a Frappucino but only kills you half as quickly.) I got myself an okay-looking polo shirt for $14, changed into it in the bathroom of Expo, and walked back over to BJ's to meet Randy, Eti, and Leslie. Then Nancy showed up around the end of the meal, and almost immediately she and Leslie turned out to be basically sisters. It was actually kind of creepy. This was the first time they met, and I think they're best friends now. I told Nancy on the way back (she gave me a ride) that I thought I had a shot with Leslie until she (Nancy) stepped into the ring. And really, I was only half-joking. Anyway, Spider-Man was great. Bedtime now.
