Day Twenty-Four: Crying Yellow Tears

On Wednesday I actually slept until 11:30. I know, that's what I should be doing every day, but lately I've been having trouble sleeping more than about 7 1/2 hours. About an hour later, Randy came over on the way back from taking the GRE and we went for a highly fattening lunch at C&O. During lunch he prank called Nancy at UCLA with the help of a Poli Sci course listing I printed out (he pretended to be an undergrad choosing between courses). Although Randy has done this sort of thing many times before, this is the first time I was able to actually witness it and I must say I admire his craft. The nasal freshman-y voice, the improv, the ability to resist laughing... it really is an art.

After lunch we roamed around Best Buy for a while, and then it was time for me to return to the optometrist for my one-week follow-up exam. I got there promptly at 5 and parked in a residential area that was off-limits as of 6; I figured I'd be okay since I would be long gone by then. Nope. After playing cell phone games for a half hour, the doctor finally came out, but only to tell me that I'd need to wait a little longer. Ugh. I went and moved my car into the bowels of the Borders parking garage and came back. And then, at around 6:00, he finally saw me. I would have complained, but what could I have said? That he was wasting my valuable time? I sat down in the chair and he put in these yellow eyedrops to check my eye pressure, whatever that is. Then he left and said I'd have to wait a few minutes before putting my contacts back in, because the drops could stain the lenses. I blotted at my eyes with some tissues and the tissues turned all yellow, like the Coldplay song. That was weird. Eventually I was able to put my contacts back in, he ordered me a box of replacement lenses, and I left. However, in order to park for free I needed to buy something from Borders, so I picked up All Fishermen Are Liars by Linda Greenlaw, the swordfisherwoman (if that's a word) who was played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in "The Perfect Storm." I've read her other two books (The Hungry Ocean and The Lobster Chronicles) and they both pretty much rocked, so I figure I'll give this one a shot too.
